The New York Jets visit the New England Patriots on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Week 6. Kickoff is noon Central (1 p.m. ET) on CBS at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
AFC East picture
Buffalo leads the division at 4-1, with New England at 3-2, the Jets at 2-3 and Miami at 0-5.
The Patriots, in Mike Vrabel's second season, lost 13-10 at Seattle in Week 1, beat Pittsburgh 20-3, lost 35-6 at Jacksonville and won 29-26 at Buffalo before routing Las Vegas last Sunday. In that game quarterback Drake Maye threw for 374 yards and four touchdowns. Maye needs 102 passing yards to reach 8,000 for his career. Receiver A.J. Brown is questionable, and cornerback Christian Gonzalez is expected to play.
The Jets, coached by Aaron Glenn, beat Tennessee 23-10 in Week 1, then lost 20-17 in overtime to Green Bay, 31-24 at Detroit and 23-12 at Chicago before beating Cleveland 17-12 last Sunday.
The history
New England leads the all-time series 77-56-1 in 134 meetings, including playoffs, where the Patriots are 2-1. The Jets' lone postseason win came in the 2010 divisional round, 28-21 at New England. The Patriots won Wild Card games in 1985 (26-14) and 2006 (37-16).
The Patriots have won three straight, including a sweep last season: 27-14 at Gillette and 42-10 at MetLife Stadium on Dec. 28, when Maye threw five touchdown passes. It was New England's 24th sweep of the Jets. The Jets' last sweep was in 2000.
The series has its lore. New England won 41-7 on "Monday Night Madness" in 1976 and 56-3 in 1979, the most lopsided result in the series. Adam Vinatieri's overtime field goal won it 27-24 in 1997, the year the Jets hired Bill Parcells. In 2001, a hit by Jets linebacker Mo Lewis on Drew Bledsoe put Tom Brady on the field.
