The Los Angeles Chargers visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Week 6. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. Central (4:25 ET) on CBS at Arrowhead Stadium.

Two ends of the AFC West

Kansas City is 4-0 and leads the division, ahead of Denver (4-2) and Las Vegas (3-2). The Chiefs, in Andy Reid's 14th season, beat Denver 31-10, Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime, Miami 24-10 and Las Vegas 30-27, then had a bye in Week 5. Patrick Mahomes (knee) was a full participant in all three practices this week. Receiver Rashee Rice and tackle Josh Simmons are out.

The Chargers are 0-5, their first such start since 2003, and last in the division in Jim Harbaugh's third season. They lost to Arizona 26-14, Las Vegas 26-14, at Buffalo 24-16, at Seattle 30-23 and last Sunday to Denver 23-17. Against Denver, Los Angeles led 17-10 in the fourth quarter and failed on a fourth-and-1 that gave the Broncos a short field. "I take 100% accountability for making that decision," Harbaugh said. Tackle Joe Alt, guard Kayode Awosika, receiver Tre' Harris, cornerback Donte Jackson and safety Derwin James Jr. are all out.

The rivalry

The Chiefs lead the regular-season series 71-59-1. The teams go back to the first week of the American Football League: on Sept. 10, 1960, the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Dallas Texans 21-20 in the first regular-season game for both franchises. The Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961, the Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963, both joined the AFC West in 1970, and the Chargers returned to Los Angeles in 2017.

The Chargers have won the last two meetings: 16-13 at Arrowhead on Dec. 14, 2025, and 27-21 in São Paulo on Sept. 5, 2025. Kansas City won both games in 2024, 19-17 at home and 17-10 in Los Angeles, and 31-17 in 2023. Mahomes is 10-4 against the Chargers in his career.
