Michael Schumacher’s documentary will air later this year, offering a rare glimpse into the life of the Formula 1 legend since he suffered a severe brain injury in a 2013 skiing accident.
Little has been known publicly about the health of the F1 world champion seven times since the crash in the French Alps in December just over seven years ago. His family has understandably been extremely protective of his privacy in the years since.
But now a documentary called ‘Schumacher’ will feature private recordings that the family has agreed to release, offering insights into the German driver’s struggle for health.
The 52-year-old’s wife, Corinna, who did not speak in public after the incident, is expected to be among the respondents who took part in the film.
Schumacher’s injury was caused by his fall and hitting his head on a rock while skiing off the piste during a family vacation. He was wearing a helmet at the time, but the injury was serious, requiring two surgeries, and Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma for six months.
Since then he has slowly improved to his home in Geneva, Switzerland.
On track last season, Briton Lewis Hamilton matched Schumacher’s record of seven F1 driver titles and surpassed his 91 wins in the race.
But there was a very touching moment when 21-year-old Mick Schumacher (who will drive for the Haas team in F1 next season) presented Hamilton with one of his father’s red helmets from his days as a Ferrari driver.
It was with the Italian team that Schumacher won five of his world championships, with the other two coming to Penetton.
Sabine Kehm, a spokesman for the Schumacher family, said: “The film portrays Michael’s impressive career, but also many of the complex man’s aspects.
“A ruthless and bold Formula 1 driver, ambitious athlete, experienced mechanic with unique technical talent, reliable team player and loving family man.”
No exact date has been set for the release, but motorsport fans – or just those interested in a great modern sports player – can expect the film before the end of the year.
