Jose Mourinho’s future at Tottenham is only going in one direction, as Daniel Levy would make his decision.
There is a “growing feeling” with people within the club that Mourinho will not be Spurs next season, according to football.london sources.
The Tottenham president was one of the forces behind the hiring of Mourinho to replace Mauricio Pochettino who was leaving in 2019. The levy had long been a Portuguese admirer, but the results in 2021 were extremely poor .
The smallest objective since the start of this season was to bring Spurs back to the Champions League for 2021/22, with an added advantage represented by success in a cup competition or even a challenge to a Premier League title.
However, while Tottenham face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final next Sunday, even a victory in that competition may not be enough to save Mourinho’s post for next season.
Spurs’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League seem increasingly slim. The club are seventh in the Premier League standings, five points from the fourth, and have played one more game than Liverpool (sixth) and Chelsea (fifth).
A 2-2 draw at Everton on Friday night saw Tottenham again drop points from a winning position. Harry Kane put the Spurs ahead, but Gylfi Sigurdsson scored twice to give Everton the lead 2-1 before Kane equalized.
However, Kane started with an ankle injury, adding more pain to an increasingly unhappy season
Tottenham fans have become increasingly frustrated with their team’s performances that have seen them lose a lot of points from winning positions and fall from the Europa League to Dinamo Zagreb despite a 2-0 first-round victory in the round of 16.
Gareth Bale’s big return from Real Madrid was disappointing (despite a purple spot of goals when he looked short at his best) as Mourinho was reluctant to offer him a start in the Premier League.
The 58-year-old player has also been prominent in his criticism of some of his players. When asked about his team’s sudden inability to defend leaders – when his teams were previously famous for watching games – he replied: “Same manager, different players.”
However, if football.london’s report is to be believed, next season will be a case of “a different manager” as those at the club strongly believe that Mourinho will be dropped in the summer.
